Intelligent network - Smart Grid

What is a Smart Grid ?

At present, one of the main areas of energy development and its direction in the future is the area of innovation and the introduction of the so-called smart grids in energy. The effort and support of building smart grids in the energy sector is the result of natural progress in the field of information and telecommunication technologies and the result of the rapid and dynamic development of decentralized production from renewable sources.

The smart grid is an advanced energy grid to which is added a two-way communication between supplier and consumer. It requires a change of perspective on the way energy systems are managed, the introduction of smart metering, monitoring, control systems, automation and ICT, as well as innovative fault detection and resolution systems. The intelligent network has the prerequisites to effectively integrate and optimize the operation of all connected elements on the production and consumption side, at all voltage levels. The role of the smart grid is to ensure a secure, economical, efficient, stable and sustainable supply of electricity from large central sources in combination with smaller distributed sources installed at points of consumption and maximize energy efficiency with respect to the environment, safety, cost minimization and quality of service. The gradual transition to smart grids is considered to be one of the most important and extensive tasks for the modernization of energy infrastructure in the history of Europe. The current deployment of smart metering systems and the subsequent provision of new energy services are important steps in the further development towards smart grids.

Research on smart grids also reflects the European Union's activities to improve the economic situation in line with the "Europe 2020 strategy: a European strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth", notably through innovation, research and development. Smart grid research priorities are fully in line with the pan-European strategic priorities and research areas defined by the SmartGrids Strategic Research Agenda 2035 as well as the priority initiatives defined in the long-term European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan).
